Nuclear medicine is a specialized area of radiology that uses a small amount of radioactive substances for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases and other endocrine and glandular conditions. This is done using safe and targeted radiotracers, which consist of radioactive materials combined with carrier molecules. ENMA is one of the few specialty clinics in San Antonio that provides on-site nuclear medicine treatment with a full-time nuclear medicine technologist.

Nuclear Medicine Treatment:

Radioactive iodine (I-131) therapy

Radioactive iodine I-131 therapy, often just called I-131 therapy, is a medical treatment commonly used for conditions like hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer.

In this nuclear medicine procedure, a patient takes a small amount of a radioactive substance, known as a radiotracer, usually by swallowing a specially prepared dose from their doctor or nuclear medicine technologist. I-131 is a form of iodine that gives off radiation. This radiation is used to target and destroy the thyroid cells causing problems, such as those producing too much thyroid hormone, resulting in hyperthyroidism.

Essentially, this treatment helps to reduce the overactivity of the thyroid gland or treat cancer by carefully targeting and eliminating the unhealthy cells.
